Après-ski and bars in Chamonix: where to have a drink, atmospheres and opening hours

Chamonix has two après-skis: the end-of-day terraces, and the pubs and bars that take over in town. Addresses by atmosphere, the opening hours that matter, happy hour, what is local in your glass, the late buses, and why an après-ski spot is not necessarily open in the evening.

Après-ski and bars in Chamonix: where to have a drink, atmospheres and opening hours

Après-ski in Chamonix happens in two stages. Around 4pm, the terraces at the foot of the slopes and La Folie Douce, at the bottom of the Savoy run, welcome skiers coming down; from 6pm, the pubs, the microbrewery and the bars of the centre take over.

The crowd is very international, and the offer shows it: pubs, cocktails, beer brewed on site and quiet cafés alongside the mountain bars. Here are the addresses by atmosphere, the opening hours that matter, what is local in your glass and how to get home after the last round.

Each number on the map is a place we have reviewed, whether a restaurant, a bar or a tea room. Tap it for the listing, or Go for walking directions.

For a particular evening, call on the day: bars in the valley adjust their hours to the snow, the crowds and their theme nights. Good Boy, opened in June 2026, is the new address of the season.

Opposite the station, Chambre Neuf and Elevation 1904 fill up as soon as the slopes close. The second has more than 1,600 reviews on Google Maps, a sign of constant footfall, and it serves food as well.

What is the après-ski at La Folie Douce like?

La Folie Douce in Chamonix is not up the mountain: it is the hotel of the same name, set in the former Savoy palace at the foot of the beginner run that comes down from the Brévent. Its terrace hosts après-ski with music in the late afternoon, as skiers come down the Savoy.

It is an end-of-day party, not a nightclub. The hotel itself is listed from €91 by the tourist office, and it is reviewed in our hotel guide.

Up on the ski areas, the Brévent's Brev'Bar only opens in good weather: summit après-ski depends on the weather and the last cabin down. The mountain terraces are covered in our guide to mountain restaurants.

What is local in your glass?

Beer is the most recognisable local drink. MBC brews in Chamonix itself, on route du Bouchet, and has done since four Canadians founded it in 2002. Basecamp Bar pours beers from the Big Mountain Brewing Company, a brewery in Cluses, in the Arve valley.

An "alpine" beer on a menu is not necessarily brewed in the region: ask about the brewery. Mulled wine is a winter drink common to every Alpine resort, not a Chamonix speciality.

Génépi, a liqueur of high-altitude plants, is everywhere, with very varied origins: regional producers, industrial preparations or flavourings. Cocktails play the local card with génépi, pine or bilberry, on base spirits from elsewhere. The food that goes with it all is in our guide to eating in Chamonix.

How can you pay less for a beer?

Aim for happy hour: at Basecamp Bar it runs from 4pm to 5:30pm, just before the mass return of skiers. MBC also advertises happy hours and theme nights depending on the week.

After that, prices follow the venue and the area. The pedestrian centre, hotel bars and cocktail bars are the most expensive; altitude adds a premium for the transport and the view.

Watch out for a 50 cl measure served by default, the difference between the bar and the heated terrace, and a compulsory drink on concert nights. The overall budget for a stay, meals included, is in what budget for Chamonix.

How late can you go out, and how do you get home?

An après-ski spot is not necessarily open in the evening: Good Boy closes at 7:30pm, La Moraine at 10pm and only five days a week. Basecamp stays open until 11pm, then Bar du Moulin and the clubs take over.

To get home, Chamonix Mobilité runs evening buses from 8:35pm to 2:29am, last pick-up, to the centre, Chamonix Sud, the bus station and several points along the valley. Frequencies range from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the line, and some lines run on demand.

Guest card discounts no longer apply after 9pm. After the last bus, a taxi or a long walk from the villages is all that is left: if you are staying in Argentière or Les Houches, check the last departure before ordering another drink. Lines and fares are detailed in getting around Chamonix.

Where can you watch a match or catch a gig?

Illustration: stainless steel brewing tanks behind the counter of a mountain bar

MBC shows ice hockey and puts on gigs among its tanks: it is the obvious address for a sports night. Basecamp Bar focuses on music and beer, near the Aiguille du Midi cable car.

Chambre Neuf has bands playing at the end of the day, straight off the slopes. La Moraine advertises regular live music in winter on its heated terrace: ask for the week's programme on site, or check the tourist office events diary.

Can you go out outside the centre?

Yes, but with less choice. In Argentière, Les Houches and the hamlets, bars have a more local crowd and close earlier. The Tête-à-Thé in Argentière is a quiet tea room, not an evening bar.

The real issue is getting back: from a village, the last bus sets the end of the evening. Life in each village is described on our page about the villages of the valley.

Tête-à-Thé

Tête-à-Thé★ 4.8 · 198 reviews

When are the bars full?

Pressure is highest in the centre between 4pm and 8pm, on sunny days, at weekends and during school holidays. The season's festivals also fill the town: the Chamonix Unlimited Festival is announced from 25 to 29 March 2027.

For a sunny terrace, arrive before the lifts close rather than after: returning skiers fill everything within half an hour. Season dates and the end of the season are on our page about skiing in April.

And if you do not want to party?

Chamonix also has its quiet addresses: neighbourhood cafés like Good Boy, a tea room in Argentière, calmer hotel bars. For an alcohol-free evening, the sports centre, cinemas and exhibitions are listed in what to do in Chamonix without skiing.

With children, late-afternoon terraces are fine, evening clubs and pubs much less so. Activities for the whole family are in Chamonix with kids.

Possible disappointments

  • Summit après-ski that closes with the lifts.
  • An après-ski café closed at 7:30pm.
  • "Regular" live music, not daily.
  • A 50 cl pint served by default at full price.
  • The last bus missed from a village.
