Cheap places to stay in Chamonix: hostels, campsites, mountain huts and valley villages

In Chamonix, the first way to save is not the cheapest hotel, it is the type of bed and the village. Dormitories, campsites and their 2026 prices, mountain huts, B&Bs, valley villages, the fees listings forget, and the calendar for booking winter 2026-2027.

Cheap places to stay in Chamonix: hostels, campsites, mountain huts and valley villages

Staying cheaply in Chamonix comes down to two decisions: the type of bed, and the village. A dormitory bed or a campsite pitch costs a fraction of a hotel room, and accommodation in Argentière or Les Houches works out much cheaper than in the centre, as long as you accept the train or the bus.

Budget hotels are covered in our guide to Chamonix hotels. This page covers everything else: hostels, campsites, mountain huts, B&Bs and valley accommodation, with the prices published in 2026 and what they leave out.

What are the cheapest options in Chamonix?

  • A hostel dormitory, the best way to save for a solo traveller, especially outside the school holidays.
  • Camping, unbeatable from May to September, but closed in winter in most cases.
  • A village in the valley: Argentière, Les Houches or Les Bossons, cheaper than the centre.
  • A mountain hut, only if your goal is hiking, never for a ski holiday.
  • A holiday village on half board, which fixes the budget with meals included.

The gap between a low-season night and a night during the February holidays or New Year can exceed 50% in commercial accommodation. Establishments rarely publish a full price grid by date: always compare the total price for your exact dates.

Is the youth hostel worth it for a solo traveller?

The HI Chamonix hostel is the first option to look at when travelling alone: a dormitory bed cuts the bill sharply compared with a private room and suits short stays. The valley's private hostels can be competitive outside the holidays, but their prices rise quickly when beds become scarce.

Allow €20 to €35 a night for a dorm bed in the region's hostels, a range noted by the magazine Alti Mag, against twice that or more for a private room. The lowest price shown almost always applies to a large dormitory, without breakfast or cancellation.

Before booking, ask about the number of beds per dormitory, sheets, breakfast, a night reception, an individual locker, any compulsory membership and the real distance to the station and the lifts.

How much does a campsite in Chamonix cost?

A campsite price breaks down: in Argentière, add €8.50 per extra adult and €7 a day for electricity, with the car and pets charged separately. Les Marmottes' bungalows range from €270 to €960 a week depending on the model and the season.

Opening dates for 2027 are announced in spring: in 2026, the first campsites opened in early May and the last closed at the end of September. The official list of campsites is kept by the tourist office.

Is the "Mer de Glace campsite" next to the glacier?

No, and it is the most common confusion in searches. The Mer de Glace campsite is at 200 chemin de la Bagna, in the valley, with a view of the Drus and the massif. The name is geographical and commercial: you do not sleep near the ice, and the Montenvers train is not included.

This campsite says it does not usually take bookings and welcomes campers as space allows, with pitches to be vacated by 11:30am. So no need to book, but no fallback on a full weekend.

There is no permanent campsite at Montenvers or on the glacier: wild camping and huts follow other rules. The site itself is described in our page on the Mer de Glace.

Which village is cheaper to stay in?

AreaNight for two in a small hotel, ski seasonTrade-off
Les Bossons€75 to €160evening return depends on seasonal timetables, walking on the road in winter
Argentière€80 to €1508 to 10 km from the centre, few restaurants, limited night transport
Les Houches€80 to €170a separate municipality, late returns less certain
Central Chamonix€100 to €220 (2 or 3-star)noise from the bars, the highest prices

These ranges are rough guides, not guaranteed rates. In Argentière, the tourist office listed La Couronne from €80. The profile of each area is in our guide to choosing where to stay in Chamonix, and life in each village in our page on the valley's villages.

Be wary of the word "centre": on booking platforms, it can mean accommodation 20 or 30 minutes' walk from the shops. Copy the address into a map and measure the route to the station, the bus stop and the lift you are aiming for.

Les Houches, the choice for families on a tight budget: the station is on the Chamonix line, the Bellevue cable car is in the village, and prices stay below those of central Chamonix.

Is a half-board holiday village good value?

Often, for a family or group that does not want to cook. The VTF Les Écontres, in Les Praz, listed a half-board week at €424 per person in a double room in April 2027. With dinner and breakfast included, the food budget, a heavy item in Chamonix, is fixed in advance.

Do the maths per person with meals included: compare this price with a cheap room plus two restaurant meals a day. Restaurant prices in the valley are detailed in our guide to eating in Chamonix, and the full budget for a stay in our page on the cost of a trip to Chamonix.

Les Praz, between the centre and La Flégère: holiday villages, residences and rooms quieter than in the centre, with La Flégère gondola within walking distance and the train to reach Chamonix.

Can you sleep in a mountain hut to save money?

Not for a ski holiday. Huts mostly open in summer, are reached on foot or by lift, and usually charge for half board rather than the night alone. Booking is compulsory or strongly advised, comfort is limited, showers are rare and cancellation is possible in bad weather.

For a hiker, on the other hand, a night in a hut is part of the trip and replaces valley accommodation. No consolidated list of 2026 prices exists for the valley's huts: each hut publishes its own. Routes that go via huts are in our Tour du Mont Blanc guide and our Chamonix hikes.

Are B&Bs a good deal?

For two or three people, when breakfast is included, they can be. For a solo traveller, they rarely beat a dormitory. No consistent, sourced 2026 price range is published for the valley's B&Bs.

Their main risk is distance: a room advertised as "Chamonix" may be in a hamlet with no late bus. If you are staying far out, renting an apartment as a group can also work out cheaper per person: see renting a chalet or apartment in Chamonix.

Which fees push up the bill?

  • The tourist tax. The Argentière campsite shows €0.20 per person per day, Les Marmottes €0.60 from age 18, each with a contradictory note on whether it is included in the package: ask for the final amount.
  • Electricity, the car, the tent, pets, charged separately at campsites.
  • Bed linen and towels in some dormitories and rentals.
  • Cleaning and the deposit for studios, mobile homes and apartments.
  • Breakfast, often separate in hostels.
  • Evening transport, once the last bus has gone.

Cheaper accommodation plus transport, breakfast, linen and parking can end up costing more than a central dormitory. Parking is detailed in parking in Chamonix, and car-free journeys in getting around Chamonix.

What should you do if you arrive late?

Let them know in writing. At the Argentière campsite, reception was open in 2026 from 8am to 12:30pm then from 4pm to 7pm in May and September, until 8pm in June, July and August. Arriving after closing is not automatically possible, even if pitches are left.

Ask about key handover or the access code, the latest arrival time, any supplement, whether you can park before checking in, and what to do if your train or bus is late. Connections from the airport are in our Geneva to Chamonix page.

When should you book to pay less?

For winter 2026-2027, book now if your Christmas, New Year or February dates are fixed. Before 15 November 2026, you still have a reasonable choice of dormitories or outlying accommodation; from December, what is left is often far out, non-refundable or more expensive. In January, watch for cancellations without counting on prices dropping.

For summer 2027, start looking in winter if you want a particular campsite or a family room, and book weekends and budget accommodation before April.

The cheapest periods tend to be November, April after many sectors close, May, June and September. The month-by-month details are in when to go to Chamonix, and the end of the ski season in our page on skiing in April.

April, the end of the season at gentler prices: Les Grands Montets and Balme are still skiing, and the week of 10 to 17 April 2027 falls after most of the holidays. It is the best balance of skiing and price all winter.

The gaps in the listings

  • Night-time noise around the bars and the station.
  • The real walking time with snow and luggage.
  • The time of the last bus after skiing or dinner.
  • The risk of being turned away from a campsite without a booking.
  • The showers, lockers and sockets available.
  • Deposits and cleaning fees.
