Renting ski gear in Chamonix: shops, online prices and tips
In Chamonix, the right rental shop is first of all the one closest to the ski area you are skiing. Shops by area, the gap between shop and online rates, what to check before paying, avalanche gear for off-piste, and when buying makes sense.

Renting skis in Chamonix raises a question purpose-built resorts ignore: where? The valley has five ski areas separated by the road, and a shop in the centre is not practical if you ski Les Grands Montets every day. So the first criterion is the shop closest to your ski area, or to your route.
The second is the channel: booking online costs much less than at the counter. Here are the rental shops by area, what the displayed prices cover and do not cover, off-piste gear, and when to buy.
Where should you rent skis depending on the ski area?
| Shop | Published address | Handy for |
|---|---|---|
| Sport 2000 O74 | 92 place Edmond-Desailloud, Chamonix Sud | the Aiguille du Midi, buses to the ski areas |
| Skiset Aiguille du Midi | 451 rue Lyret, Chamonix Sud | the Aiguille du Midi and the Vallée Blanche |
| Sport 2000 La Ginabelle | 120 place du Poilu, centre | Le Brévent, on foot |
| Sport 2000 Cham'Sport Michel Croz | 168 avenue Michel-Croz, centre | the centre and the station |
| Sanglard Sports, Rentski | 199 place du Mont-Blanc, centre | avalanche gear |
| Ski Republic | 200 avenue de l'Aiguille-du-Midi | the Aiguille du Midi area |
| Ekosport-Rent Skimax | 34 chemin des Arberons | to compare with the central shops |
| Sport 2000 Location des Planards | chemin du Pied-du-Grépon | beginners and families at the Planards |
| Sport 2000 Stamos Sports | Grand Roc shopping centre, Argentière | Les Grands Montets |
Sport 2000 announces six shops in Chamonix on one page and eight in the municipality on another, without specifying the scope. Ravanel & Co, often mentioned for ski touring, did not publish verifiable prices.
If you ski several areas, the centre and Chamonix Sud remain the best placed, on the bus routes. The ski areas and how to reach them are explained in our piste map guide.
How much does ski rental cost in Chamonix?
| Rental shop | Shop rate shown | Online rate shown |
|---|---|---|
| Sport 2000 La Ginabelle | €112 | €78.40 |
| Sport 2000 Cham'Sport Michel Croz | €113 | €90.20 |
| Sport 2000 O74 | €122 | €91.50 |
| Ski Republic | €115 | not shown |
| Ekosport-Rent Skimax | €119 | €90.20 |
These amounts, noted on a comparison site in October 2026, range from €78.40 to €91.50 online against €112 to €122 in store. The gap is around 20 to 25% depending on the shop, with free changes or cancellation announced for several offers.
For a week, the right benchmark is the six-day adult package, skis, poles and boots: allow €82 to €156 depending on the range, from beginner to expert. In Argentière, Skiset showed this package at €177 in store, down to €97.35 when booked online.
The comparison-site prices above mainly show the gap between the two channels, over the same duration: book online, then collect your equipment in the shop the day before your first day on the slopes.
What should you check before paying?
Compare the shops on the same basket, adult and child, skis only, boots only or full package, by the day or by the week. In each brand's booking process, check:
- the exact duration and dates covered by the price;
- what the package includes: skis, boots, poles, helmet;
- the equipment range, from beginner to expert model;
- damage and theft insurance, and its excess;
- the deposit or card pre-authorisation;
- late return fees;
- cancellation terms and their deadline.
For a child, compare the exact category (age, height, level, range), not just the word "junior", and ask whether a change of boot size during the stay is free. The lessons that go with it are compared in our page on ski lessons.
Fancy an instructor or a guided outing? Ski lessons, introductions to off-piste, a guided descent of the Vallée Blanche: our partner's Chamonix page gathers snow activities, with reviews and cancellation terms.

During the school holidays, O74 was open Monday to Friday from 8:15am to 12:45pm and 3:45pm to 7pm, and non-stop from 8:15am to 7pm at weekends. Skiset Aiguille du Midi shows opening hours of 8:30am to 7pm, in an ambiguous presentation that should be confirmed for each day.
The weekday lunch break matters: if you arrive at 1pm, you will wait until the afternoon. Outside the holidays and early in the season, hours are reduced. The best move is to collect your gear the evening before, when the shop allows it, so you are on the slopes at opening time.
What should you rent for off-piste and ski touring?
The minimum safety kit off the pistes is the trio of transceiver, shovel and probe. Sanglard Sports rented the package at €20 online, the transceiver alone at €15, and the shovel and probe at €4 each, without stating the duration. The transceiver comes without batteries: bring some.
For touring, you also need touring skis, skins, compatible boots and poles, and possibly an airbag pack, crampons and an ice axe depending on the route. Book the whole set, not just the transceiver: touring skis and boots are often the first to run out.
Renting the gear replaces neither training nor a professional.
Evolution 2 charged €160 per person in low season and €180 in high season for an off-piste outing in a group of four to six, and €550 in high season for a private guide for up to four people. The safety trio is provided, touring skis are not. The most famous descent is detailed in our Vallée Blanche guide.
How do you rent for a family or beginners?
For beginners, rent at the foot of the small ski areas: the Planards shop, on chemin du Pied-du-Grépon, is next to the learning area. You hand the gear back at the end of the session without carrying it onto the bus, and swap sizes on the spot if a boot hurts.
The Soleil beginner pass, valid at the Savoy and Planpraz among others, costs €27.50 for an adult day and €23.40 for young people and seniors. It saves you paying for the big lift pass on the first days. Activities for children, on the snow and elsewhere, are in Chamonix with kids.
Ask for a helmet for each child, and check that it is included in the package: it is not always. For the very young, ask for the shortest ski length available in the shop.
Should you rent or buy?
| Duration or practice | The most rational choice |
|---|---|
| One to three days | rent: no transport, maintenance or storage |
| Four to seven days | compare the online package with entry-level gear; rent if your level or boot size may change |
| Several stays in the season | buying becomes defensible, especially boots |
| Occasional off-piste | rent, for specialised gear and recent transceivers |
| Children | rent, as sizes change every winter |
A six-day intermediate package costs around a hundred euros a week: for two weeks of skiing a year, renting remains simpler than equipment you have to carry and maintain. Boots are the exception, as they make most of the difference to comfort and can be bought on their own if you ski every winter.
How can you pay less for your rental?
- Book online, several days ahead, for the online rate.
- Choose the right range: the top range does not help a beginner.
- Rent near the ski area so you do not pay in transport time with your gear.
- Bundle rental with the lift pass and lessons to compare the total cost.
A lift pass booked at least 3 days ahead also gets the best prices, and it gives you free buses: see our lift pass guide. The cost of a full week is worked out in how much a trip to Chamonix costs.
The small print of commercial websites
- The displayed price depends on the period entered: it does not necessarily apply during the holidays.
- The duration the price covers is not always shown.
- Deposits, insurance and excesses often only come up at the counter: ask before you pay.
- Opening hours change during school holidays, out of season and on public holidays.
- Being close to a lift does not guarantee the size or range you want: large sizes and touring gear go first.

Staying in the centre means renting and returning your gear on foot, with the shops, buses to every ski area and Le Brévent at the end of the street. The simplest option for a first ski trip to Chamonix.

Clémence grew up in Les Houches and worked four winters at the ticket office of a lift in the valley. She knows which passes sell for too much on a Saturday, and which runs close first when the snow gives way in April. She only gives a lift time if it is on that day's board.
