Pointe Helbronner and the Skyway Monte Bianco: from Chamonix to Courmayeur over the glaciers

Crossing the Mont Blanc massif by cabin, from the Aiguille du Midi to Pointe Helbronner then down to Courmayeur, is one of the most spectacular excursions in the Alps. How the three lifts link up, what they cost, when they run, how to get back to Chamonix, and why the middle link is the most fragile.

Pointe Helbronner and the Skyway Monte Bianco: from Chamonix to Courmayeur over the glaciers

Going from Chamonix to Courmayeur over the glaciers means linking three lifts: the Aiguille du Midi cable car, the Panoramic Mont-Blanc gondola that flies over the Géant glacier to Pointe Helbronner, then the Skyway Monte Bianco that goes down to Courmayeur. It is a panoramic excursion, not transport: three operators, three tickets, and a seasonal middle link.

Here is how the crossing works, what it costs, when it is possible, how to get back to Chamonix, and what makes it fail.

How does the crossing from Chamonix to Courmayeur work?

Rocky, snowy face of the Mont Blanc massif under a cloudy sky
  1. Chamonix to the Aiguille du Midi: the cable car climbs to 3,842 m.
  2. Aiguille du Midi to Pointe Helbronner: the Panoramic Mont-Blanc flies over the Géant glacier and the Vallée Blanche, in about 30 to 35 minutes according to the descriptions, with no guaranteed duration.
  3. Pointe Helbronner, Pavillon, Courmayeur: the Skyway Monte Bianco goes down the Italian side.
  4. Courmayeur to Chamonix: back by road, by bus or transfer, through the Mont Blanc Tunnel.

The link does not necessarily run in both directions or all season, and the Panoramic can be closed while the Aiguille du Midi and the Skyway are running. Only book a full day after checking that all three sections are open.

How much does the crossing cost?

Skyway, Courmayeur-Helbronner, return online (2026)€59€63 in high season
Skyway, one way (2026)€46€49 in high season
Skyway car park, 6 to 12 hours€10free for 30 minutes, €2 an hour up to 5 hours

The Skyway's high season covers the Christmas and New Year holidays and the month of August, among others. On the Skyway side, the Panoramic is only sold at the ticket desk when it is running. A private "Exclusive Experience" cabin is listed at €860.

The summer Multipass includes the Aiguille du Midi and the Skyway, but not the Panoramic: see our page on the Mont-Blanc Multipass. No child, family or senior discount is generally published for the Skyway, and no free first Sunday of the month. The Courmayeur ski pass gives access to the Skyway while it is valid, by reservation.

When is the crossing possible?

Mainly in summer, when the Panoramic is running. It was announced as closed from 28 September 2026 to 16 May 2027, dates to be confirmed, and the Skyway website talks about reopening "this summer" without a precise date. Outside that window, Helbronner can be visited from Courmayeur, and the Aiguille from Chamonix, separately.

The Skyway itself closes between seasons: its timetable shows a closure from 16 November to 4 December 2026, whereas another page only publishes its periods up to 1 November. The Aiguille du Midi closes from 2 November to 18 December 2026.

The timetables are asymmetric. From 14 September to 1 November 2026, the last departure for a Skyway return was at 2:30pm, the last one-way ride up at 3pm and the last ride down at 3:30pm: arriving late at Helbronner can stop you coming down by lift.

Do the crossing with a guide or an organised trip? Chamonix-Courmayeur days with return transport, a guided ride up the Aiguille du Midi, glacier outings with a guide: our partner's Chamonix page gathers the offers, with reviews and cancellation terms.

What can you see from Pointe Helbronner?

Illustration: panoramic terrace at Pointe Helbronner, visitors facing the Grandes Jorasses and the Géant glacier under a clear sky

Mont Blanc, the Grandes Jorasses, the Vallée Blanche and the whole Italian side, from a panoramic room and viewing terraces. It is the best goal on the Italian side for anyone who wants views without skiing, and the visit can stay short.

Altitude is the limiting factor: fatigue, headache, breathlessness and cold quickly reduce comfort, especially after the ride up the Aiguille du Midi. Bring warm clothes, sunglasses, sun protection, water and take breaks. The effects of altitude are described in our page on the Aiguille du Midi.

How do you get back to Chamonix?

By road: a bus or transfer from Courmayeur to Chamonix through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, 30 to 45 minutes from centre to centre without queues. Cross-border bus timetables vary with the season, with no stable year-round schedule published: check the last departure before leaving Chamonix.

Keep a wide margin between the Skyway descent and the bus: a lift ticket guarantees no connection, and queues at the tunnel or a night closure can block the return. The tunnel, its toll and its closures are detailed in our page on the Mont Blanc Tunnel.

Can you cross on foot via the Vallée Blanche?

It is not the walking equivalent of the Panoramic. Crossing the Vallée Blanche is a glacier route, with crevasses, snow bridges and difficult route-finding, which requires favourable conditions, gear, skills and, for most visitors, a high-mountain guide. It is not something to promise a family or a non-mountaineering walker.

The ski descent of the Vallée Blanche, the best-known version, is covered in our Vallée Blanche guide.

How much time should you allow?

Illustration: Skyway Monte Bianco base station above Courmayeur, a glass cabin rising towards the glaciers of the Italian side
OptionRealistic time
Skyway alone from Courmayeur2 to 3 hours, not counting the trip to Courmayeur
Aiguille du Midi alonehalf a day
Aiguille du Midi and Panoramic, return4 to 6 hours
Loop Chamonix, Helbronner, Courmayeur, Chamonixa full day, often 8 to 10 hours

These are planning margins, not official timetables. Set off on the first departure on a clear day: visibility is better in the morning and clouds often build in the afternoon. Check the webcams before paying, using our method for reading the Aiguille weather.

Is it better to start from Chamonix or from Courmayeur?

From Chamonix, the full crossing is the most powerful experience, but it depends on three lifts and a road journey back: it is a full day that forgives neither delays nor a cloud. It is worth it for a stay in which you have already seen the Aiguille du Midi, or for anyone who wants Italy as a bonus.

From Courmayeur, the Skyway alone takes you to Helbronner without depending on the Aiguille du Midi or the Panoramic: 2 to 3 hours on site, a more flexible option, reachable by car through the tunnel, at the cost of the toll. For a first taste of the high mountains from Chamonix, the Aiguille du Midi alone remains the best balance of time and emotion.

Do you need papers to cross into Italy?

Yes. You cross from one country to another within the Schengen area, with no systematic checks, but everyone must carry a valid ID card or passport, children included. Non-EU nationals should check the conditions of their visa or residence permit.

What disappoints most?

  • The crossing in overcast weather: the price stays the same, the view disappears.
  • The idea of a simple journey: three tickets, connections and the weather.
  • A closed Panoramic, the fragile link, while both ends are running.
  • Midday slots in high season: queues, groups and clouds.
  • The restaurant as a goal: the view is the draw, not the food.
  • Parking and meals, which come on top of the displayed price.

Pushchairs and wheelchairs should be checked case by case with each operator: platforms, cabins and changes of level do not offer the same accessibility. Aiguille du Midi tickets are detailed in our ticket guide, and other outings in the What to do section.

Can you do the crossing without speaking French or Italian?

For the most part, yes: online tickets, signs and lifts are designed for an international public, in French, Italian and English. Another language becomes useful in case of a weather closure, a cancelled connection or a ticket problem, and essential for a glacier outing with a guide.

Leave Chamonix on the first cabin: to complete the Italian loop in a day, you need to be at the Aiguille du Midi departure at opening time. Accommodation in central Chamonix puts the cable car within walking distance and the bus station next door for the return.
