Hotels in Chamonix: choosing by budget, by type and by lift

A "from" price in October says nothing about the price of a Saturday in February. Chamonix hotels by category, what the most searched-for addresses are worth, the total cost once breakfast and tax are added, when to book, and how to choose based on the lift you will take.

Hotels in Chamonix: choosing by budget, by type and by lift

Choosing a hotel in Chamonix means weighing four things that never come together: the ski area you will use, the real distance to the station and the lifts, a quiet night and the total cost. No address ticks all four; the right one is the one that ticks yours.

This page ranks hotels by budget and type, with the prices noted in October 2026 and what they are worth in season. Choosing the village, from the centre to Les Houches, is covered separately in where to stay in Chamonix, area by area.

The 24 hotels and hostels we have reviewed are on the map, from the centre to Les Houches and Argentière. Tap a number to open the listing, or Go for walking directions.

Our tip: At the reception desk, the question that came up every day was parking: before booking, ask whether the hotel has a garage, what it costs per night, and whether it must be booked with the room.

How much does a hotel night in Chamonix cost?

The available figures are "from" prices shown in late October 2026, not a season average. They still help set the orders of magnitude:

CategoryAutumn 2026, one-off checksSki peak, rough guide
Entry levelabout €90 to €130, La Folie Douce shown from €91€150 to €250 and more
Mid-rangeabout €100 to €200, Le Prieuré from €104, the Alpina from €177€200 to €400
Upmarketabout €200 to €300, the Hameau Albert 1er from €197€350 to €700

The ski season has several peaks: Christmas, New Year, the French February holidays, the British half-term weeks and certain weekends in March. A €120 room in November says nothing about the same hotel on a Saturday in February. The peak ranges are rough guides, as no consistent data series is published.

Which hotels suit a small budget?

The entry level relies on small independent hotels, valley addresses and a few simple hotels in the centre. The "from" price may apply to an off-peak date, a room without breakfast, a non-refundable rate or double occupancy: compare like with like.

The real way to save is geographical: Argentière, Les Houches or Les Bossons are much cheaper than the centre, as long as you accept the train or the bus. In Argentière, the tourist office lists La Couronne from €80. To go further, hostels, campsites and mountain huts have their own logic: see the Sleep section.

What are the most searched-for mid-range hotels worth?

These addresses all answer the search "hotel Chamonix centre", but not the same need. La Folie Douce banks on a lively atmosphere: a pleasure for some, a letdown for light sleepers.

For the Aiguille du Midi, Le Morgane, in Chamonix Sud, and Le Prieuré, south-west of the centre, are three and six minutes' walk from the cable car. La Folie Douce, to the north-west, is better placed for the Brévent, as the Savoy run ends at its door.

Which upmarket addresses, and which hotels with a spa?

The Hameau Albert 1er, a Relais & Châteaux at 38 route du Bouchet, combines fine dining and a spa in a more residential setting. The prices noted vary by source: from €197 on the tourist office site, €214 at the booking rate shown on 27 October, CHF 243 including taxes on one platform. Le Morgane, south of the centre, and the Hôtel Mont-Blanc, a heritage address in the historic centre, complete the upmarket offer.

For spa hotels, the tourist office shows widely spread starting prices: Héliopic from €110, the Hameau Albert 1er from €197, the Grand Hôtel des Alpes from €267, the Hôtel Mont-Blanc from €300. These are starting prices, not guaranteed rates: they depend on the date and the room.

Watch the categories: La Folie Douce can appear as a four-star with a one-off rate lower than a three-star on a ski weekend. Price tells you nothing about quiet, distance to the slopes or how well you will sleep.

How far from the slopes are the hotels in the centre?

Further than you might think. The centre is compact, but the ski areas are scattered:

  • The Aiguille du Midi leaves from the south of the centre: the hotels in Chamonix Sud and the south-west (Morgane, Heliopic, Les Aiglons, Prieuré) are best placed. See the Aiguille du Midi.
  • Le Brévent leaves from the top of the town centre, walking distance from most central hotels. See Le Brévent.
  • La Flégère leaves from Les Praz: from the centre, that means a bus or train every day. See La Flégère.
  • Les Grands Montets are in Argentière, 8 to 10 kilometres away. See Les Grands Montets.
  • Les Houches is to the west, several kilometres from the centre.

"Ski-in, ski-out" should be read with caution in Chamonix: at best it means access to a local run or one ski area, never to the whole valley. Central hotels sell proximity to restaurants, not to the slopes. And platform distances ("0.39 km from Chamonix") start from an arbitrary point: measure the walking route to your lift on the map of Chamonix.

What does a night cost once everything is added?

The displayed price is not the total cost. At Le Prieuré, one platform showed a buffet breakfast at €34 per adult and €19 per child as a supplement, and a tourist tax of €3.60 per person per night. For a couple over three nights, that is about €225 that was not in the room price.

The tourist tax rate depends on the category and rating: do not generalise this amount. Also check:

  • parking, rarely priced consistently, see parking in Chamonix;
  • pets, the spa, an extra bed and a cot;
  • supplements for early check-in or late check-out;
  • the gap between the refundable and non-refundable rates;
  • the deposit or card pre-authorisation, to ask about before you arrive.

For a late arrival, ask before paying for the reception's closing time, the key handover procedure, an emergency number and any fees. Some hotels have a night reception, others work with a code: arriving after closing without written agreement may be impossible.

When should you book your hotel for winter 2026-2027?

Here are our cautious rules as of the time of writing, late October 2026:

  • Christmas and New Year: choice shrinks sharply from November, especially for central hotels and family rooms.
  • French February holidays 2027: from December, you often have to accept an outlying area, a minimum stay or a high rate.
  • Weekends in February and March: eight to twelve weeks ahead, with Saturdays going before Sunday to Thursday nights.
  • Summer 2027: before April for central hotels and family rooms in July and August.

For the start of the season, see lift opening dates; for the end, skiing in Chamonix in April.

Open the season before the Christmas crowds: on the second weekend of December, the first ski areas are running and central hotels do not yet have their Christmas rates. The dates below are set for that weekend.

The most common disappointments

  • Staying in the centre does not remove the trip to the slopes. The valley has several separate ski areas, see our guide to skiing in Chamonix.
  • The view comes at the cost of transport links. A hotel facing the glacier can be far from the shops and the last bus.
  • The displayed price is not the price you pay. Breakfast, tax, parking and the spa come on top.
  • Quiet and nightlife are mutually exclusive. A central, lively address is rarely silent.
  • The villages are not districts. Les Houches, Argentière and Les Bossons have their own life and their own access to activities.
  • The snow is not in the room. A hotel close to a closed or partly open ski area is not worth what its sector promises, see the lift pass.

For the best period for your plans, see when to go to Chamonix, and for practical services on site, practical services in Chamonix. Outing ideas are in things to do in Chamonix.

The end of the season, when hotels breathe again: from 10 to 17 April 2027, the valley's last week of skiing, with gentler rates than in midwinter and the Aiguille du Midi open until 5pm.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hotel in Chamonix cost in winter?
As a rough guide, €150 to €250 a night at entry level during the ski peaks, €200 to €400 mid-range and €350 to €700 upmarket. Outside the peaks, starting prices begin at around €90.
Which hotel should you choose in Chamonix for the Aiguille du Midi?
A hotel in Chamonix Sud or south-west of the centre: Le Morgane and the Heliopic are three minutes' walk from the cable car, Le Prieuré six. Hotels in the north of the centre add another ten minutes' walk.
Is breakfast included in Chamonix hotels?
Often not. At Le Prieuré, one platform showed €34 per adult as a supplement. Always check what the displayed rate includes.
Are there ski-in ski-out hotels in Chamonix?
Not in the sense of a purpose-built resort: the ski areas are scattered along the valley. A hotel can be close to one lift, rarely to all of them. Choose based on the ski area you will ski most.
How much is the tourist tax in Chamonix?
It depends on the hotel's category: one platform showed €3.60 per person per night for Le Prieuré. It is added to the price shown: look at the breakdown in your basket.
