Where to stay in Chamonix? The guide by area and by village in the valley

In Chamonix, the right question is not "which hotel" but "which lift". The eight areas where people sleep in the valley, what they mean for skiing, buses and evenings out, their season prices, and the traps in listings.

Where to stay in Chamonix? The guide by area and by village in the valley

A listing "in Chamonix" can mean a hotel on the main street or a chalet twelve kilometres away in Le Tour. The valley is long, the lifts are scattered, and the evening bus does not run on dinner time.

So the right question is not "which hotel", but "which lift, and with or without a car". Here are the eight areas where people sleep in the valley, what they are worth for a ski trip, and what listings never measure.

The villages of the valley are on the map, from Les Houches to Vallorcine. Tap a number for what it offers, then Go for directions.

Each number is a village or hamlet served by the Mont-Blanc Express train or the bus: tap, then Go
Share this map :Email

Our tip: Before booking, measure on a map the walk between your accommodation and the lift you will use most: ten minutes on foot in ski boots feels like thirty.

Which area should you choose, in one line?

  • Without a car, to go out in the evening: the town centre.
  • To ski La Flégère from a village: Les Praz.
  • For Les Grands Montets: Argentière, after checking the state of the ski area on your dates.
  • For families on a tight budget: Les Houches.
  • For peace and nature: Vallorcine or Le Tour.
  • If sleep comes first: avoid the streets around rue du Docteur-Paccard and place Balmat, where the bars are, especially at weekends.

The price ranges below are rough guides for a night for two, excluding tourist tax and cleaning fees. The tourist office publishes "from" prices, never a price grid by area: we give them as benchmarks, not as a rate card.

The town centre: everything on foot, but not in silence

Who it suits: a first trip, a stay without a car, people who want restaurants and nightlife on foot.

It is the only area where you can improvise an evening without transport. The SNCF station, the bus station, the Aiguille du Midi cable car and the Brévent cable car are within walking distance. Expect €100 to €220 in a 2 or 3-star hotel during ski season, €220 to €500 in a 4 or 5-star, and €140 to €350 for an apartment.

The trade-off: price and noise. A room on a shopping street hears the morning deliveries, people leaving the bars and the snow clearing.

Measure "close to the lifts" to the exact departure point: the Aiguille du Midi and Planpraz do not leave from the same place. Among the addresses in the heart of town, the tourist office mentions La Verticale, the Hôtel du Clocher, Pointe Isabelle and Le Chamonix.

Staying in the centre means leaving the car in the car park for the week. Aim for an address less than ten minutes' walk from the station or the lift you will use most, on a quiet street.

Les Pèlerins and Les Bossons: cheaper, quieter, further

Les Pèlerins, south-west of the centre, is residential and quieter. It is 20 to 35 minutes on foot from the centre depending on the street, well placed for the Aiguille du Midi by car or bus, with prices of €80 to €160 a night in a hotel or guest room. Do not book an address without knowing the time of the last bus.

Les Bossons, further towards Les Houches, is very quiet, with a view of the glacier and almost no nightlife. Expect €75 to €160 a night in a guest room or small hotel. A car is often useful there; the tourist office singles out the Hôtel Aiguille du Midi and its view of the Bossons glacier.

Les Praz: the best compromise for La Flégère

Who it suits: La Flégère skiers, couples, families who want a village without isolation.

The village has its own station and La Flégère gondola, about 2.5 to 3 kilometres from the centre, or 30 to 40 minutes on foot. It is more peaceful and prettier than the centre, with a few bar-restaurants to liven it up. Expect €100 to €220 in a 2 or 3-star hotel in season, €130 to €350 for an apartment.

The tourist office mentions Les Lanchers for its village atmosphere, and the VTF Les Écontres, which advertises a half-board week from €424 per person in April 2027, in a double room. There is less choice than in the centre: booking late leaves little room on parking and room type. The ski area is described in our page on La Flégère.

Les Praz, on the golf course, 250 m from La Flégère · Double room for two from €117 for the night of 10 April 2027 (last week of skiing), checked on 27 October 2026

In Les Praz, La Flégère gondola and the station are within walking distance. A good choice to ski without a car while sleeping somewhere quiet, two train stops from the centre.

Argentière: a self-contained village at the foot of Les Grands Montets

Illustration: chalets in Argentière under snow at the foot of the Aiguille Verte, a small snowy road climbing towards the Grands Montets gondola

Who it suits: Grands Montets skiers, independent families, people who do not need to go back to the centre every evening.

Argentière is about 8 kilometres from the centre, 15 to 25 minutes by train or car, with its own station, bars and restaurants in season. Expect €80 to €150 a night in an entry-level hotel, €128 to €250 in a hotel with a spa. The tourist office lists La Couronne from €80 and Les Grands Montets Hôtel & Spa from €128.

One thing to check before paying anything: how the Grands Montets ski area is set up on your dates. A hotel at the foot of the area does not guarantee that every lift is running, and the summit is still announced as closed for winter 2026-2027. See our page on Les Grands Montets.

In Argentière, choose accommodation with a garage and a proper ski room. The village keeps its mountain spirit and the latest snow in the valley, with the train to reach the centre.

Les Houches: the family choice, six kilometres away

Who it suits: families, tight budgets, stays with a car built around local skiing.

Les Houches is often sold as "Chamonix" when the centre is about 6 kilometres away, 15 to 25 minutes. That is an advantage for price, parking and children, with its own ski area that is easy for beginners. Expect €80 to €170 in a 2 or 3-star hotel, €100 to €300 for an apartment, and €250 to €800 or more for a chalet.

The drawback: days at La Flégère, Balme or Les Grands Montets add up the journeys, and the Les Houches lift pass is not the Chamonix one. The tourist office highlights the Chalet-Hôtel du Bois for its pool and Les Campanules for its family rooms.

For families, Les Houches gives you more space for the same budget, an easy ski area and simpler parking than central Chamonix.

See places to stay in Les Houches →Partner link: booking through it supports the site at no extra cost to you.

Vallorcine and Le Tour: peace and quiet, with timetables

Vallorcine is an unspoilt village served by the valley train, as close to Switzerland as you can get. The quiet is real, the nightlife almost non-existent, and late returns are a constraint. Expect €100 to €240 in a residence or hotel, and check that shops are really open outside the holidays.

Le Tour, 10 or 12 kilometres away, is a hamlet at the foot of the Balme ski area, dependent on the car or the bus timetable. Accommodation is mostly chalets, often €250 to €700 a night or more. In both places, parking, the ski room and self check-in matter more than the spa in the listing.

For a quiet stay, Vallorcine can be reached by train from Chamonix, free with the guest card as far as Vallorcine. Check the time of the last train before booking.

These are working ranges, not official averages. The New Year peak shows clearly on chalets: a listing for twelve people goes from €4,600 to €8,400 a week to €9,400 for New Year week, tourist tax not included. The comparison by category and budget is in our guide to hotels in Chamonix.

When should you book for winter 2026-2027?

Here are our cautious thresholds as of the time of writing, late October 2026:

  • New Year and the February 2027 holidays: choice is already limited, especially for four nights or more, family accommodation and parking. Book without waiting.
  • January outside the holidays: still possible, but weekends tighten from mid-December.
  • March 2027: book before mid-November, as Saturdays and groups go from mid-January.
  • April 2027: before mid-December for the best choice, with more flexibility midweek.

A group of six or more, or a Saturday-to-Saturday rental, should book even earlier. For the end of the season, see skiing in Chamonix in April.

April, the season that stays open: the last week before the ski areas close, from 10 to 17 April 2027, combines spring snow, long days and gentler prices than during the holidays.

What should you check before paying?

Illustration: ski room in a chalet in the Chamonix valley, skis stored in a rack and boots on a heated boot dryer

The ski room

"Ski room" does not mean a heated room or an individual locker. Ask whether the room is locked and reserved for guests, whether there is a boot dryer, whether you can leave your gear there on departure day, and how far it is from the bus stop or the lift.

Parking

"Parking" can mean three outdoor spaces that cannot be reserved. Ask for details: allocated or shared space, locked garage, height limit, snow clearing, charging point, nightly supplement. In the centre, accommodation without a reserved space can cost you more in time than an address further out with a garage; see parking in Chamonix.

The guest card and the bus

The guest card, given free by your accommodation, gives discounts on the bus, for example €10 for a seven-day pass. It is not a ticket: you need a ticket or a lift pass, and the discounts stop at 9pm.

"Served by bus" does not mean "you can get back after dinner". The network is explained in getting around Chamonix.

Tourist tax, cleaning, deposit

The tourist tax is not always included: it depends on the category of accommodation and is paid per person per night. Also look for cleaning fees, linen, pet supplements, platform fees, late arrival supplements and the deposit: ask in writing for its amount, how it is held and when it is returned.

The blind spots of listings

  • "Centre" does not always mean centre. An address in Les Houches or Vallorcine shows up in "Chamonix" search results.
  • Quiet is relative. Deliveries, snow clearing, shuttles and bars appear in no brochure.
  • Things close out of season. A restaurant, a shuttle or a reception desk can close on certain days in the villages.
  • Proximity does not guarantee skiing. A hotel near a ski area tells you nothing about snow cover or lift openings in December and April.

To place each village, see the map of Chamonix; to get here, how to get to Chamonix and Geneva to Chamonix. Choosing a ski area for your level is in our guide to skiing in Chamonix, lift pass prices in our lift pass guide, and the right month in when to go to Chamonix.

For the Aiguille du Midi, staying on the Chamonix Sud side spares you the car on the morning of your slot: see our Aiguille du Midi guide and our Brévent guide. Staying near the SNCF station also puts the Montenvers train a few steps away for the Mer de Glace.

Pharmacies, left luggage and emergency numbers are gathered in practical services in Chamonix. Our other accommodation guides are in the Sleep section, and all the valley's skiing in the Skiing section.

Frequently asked questions

Which area should you stay in for a first trip to Chamonix?
The centre, if you come without a car and want to do everything on foot, from the Aiguille du Midi cable car to the restaurants. Pick a side street: the area around the bars is noisy at night.
Where should you stay in Chamonix to ski Les Grands Montets?
In Argentière, at the foot of the ski area, with La Couronne listed from €80 and Les Grands Montets Hôtel & Spa from €128. First check which lifts are running on your dates.
Is Les Houches still Chamonix?
It is the same valley, but about 6 kilometres from the centre, with a separate ski area and lift pass. It is cheaper and more practical for families, less so for evenings out.
How much does a hotel night in Chamonix cost in winter?
As a rough guide, €100 to €220 a night for two in a 2 or 3-star hotel in the centre during ski season, and €80 to €170 in Les Houches. Christmas, New Year and the February holidays push these prices up.
Does the guest card make the bus free?
No, it gives discounts, such as €10 for a seven-day pass. The bus is free with a valid lift pass, and the card makes the train free between Servoz and Vallorcine.
